Double Feature

Check it out: Double Feature

Double Feature is my favorite movie podcast. Every week (and I mean EVERY, they've never missed a show in years) the hosts Eric and Michael put two films together with some kind of theme. They have really in-depth discussions about what is important in the movie...even if they movie itself isn't very notable.

Sometimes they talk about a movie's influence in a genre. Sometimes they talk about something a film has never done before. Sometimes they talk about a really interesting idea the movie provoked. I love how they can find something important to talk about in literally any pairing.

The show is really rewarding for people who listen a lot. They try to keep their references to movies they've already discussed on a show so you always kinda know what they're talking about. The films they cover tend to be a nice middle ground between obscure and mainstream. In an attempt to understand all different types of movies...even slashers...their format will sometimes include marathons under the heading of Killapalooza.

While they cover a lot of different genres, the podcast really understands the grindhouse/exploitation style - it even comes out at midnight (Chicago time) every week! Each episode has distinct cover art according to the films they're covering. Here's a few examples:

Filmspotting

Check it out: Filmspotting

Filmspotting is a pretty solid show. There's a lot of fluff (the advertising, always with the advertising) and if you don't like some of their "features" ie DVD picks and Massacre Theater than there's a TON of fluff...but that's what the fast forward button is for, right?

When they actually do get around to their discussions, they're some of the most insightful reviews you're going to find. Not only do they cover what's new, but they also do marathons of different directors or eras.

My favorite part about Filmspotting is that I pretty much have no idea what they're going to think about a particular movie. It's always a surprise. Just when you think you have them pinned down, they switch it up on you. It keeps everything really fresh, which is something movie podcasts need more of.

Trailers From Hell

Check it out: Trailers From Hell

The Trailers form Hell is actually a video podcast, but I'm sticking it on the list because it's just so damn good. TFH's concept is basically this...each episode is a class movie preview or comic attraction with a voice over from a famous director...but not the director of that movie. Make sense?

The directors talk about why it's such a wonderful or awful trailer. Not only is it entertaining to watch, but it's also a great place to find out about new movies.

The full roster of commentators as of right now is Allison Anders, Allan Arkush, John Badham, Rick Baker, Larry Cohen, Don Coscarelli, Joe Dante, Jon Davison, David DeCoteau, Ernest Dickerson, Bill Duke, Mick Garris, Stuart Gordon, Sam Hamm, George Hickenlooper, Jack Hill, Tim Hunter, Dan Ireland, Larry Karaszewski, Neil Labute, Mary Lambert, John Landis, Michael Lehmann, Rod Lurie, Josh Olson, Mark Pellington, Adam Rifkin, Howard Rodman, Eli Roth, Katt Shea, Jesus Trevino, Chris Wilkinson, and Edgar Wright.

The /Filmcast

Check it out: The /Filmcast

The so-called slash filmcast is the official podcast of the Slashfilm site. The show is put out by David, Devindra, and Adam from the site. They talk a lot about not only the latest films and film news but also tv shows and general entertainment stuff.

The show comes out every week, and every once in a while they'll even convince a real live celebrity to come on on the show.

One thing to note is slashfilm's length. The show can go on reaaaaaaaally long. Some shows are over two hours! It's a fun , spoiler inclusive, explicit time though, so it's all good.
